Accessibility
A guide to the layout, so you can decide what suits you.
The Barn by the Ford is a characterful conversion of an old agricultural building, full of charm but with the steps, low ceilings and narrow spaces that come with it. We would rather be honest about the layout than have a guest arrive to a surprise, so the notes below set out what to expect. If you have a specific access need, please make an enquiry before booking and we will tell you frankly whether the barn will work for you.
In short
The barn is best suited to guests who are comfortable with stairs and steps. The only bedroom and the sitting room are upstairs, reached by a narrow central staircase, and the bedroom sits beneath low sloping eaves. There is no ground-floor bedroom and no outside space.
Arriving and parking
Parking is on the road, with no allocated space, so the spot available can vary. The barn is entered directly from the roadside.
Ground floor
You enter into the kitchen and breakfast room, which has the Aga, hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and microwave. From there, two steps lead down to a short hallway, off which is the shower-room - a walk-in rainfall shower, WC and wash-basin, with no bath. A utility area houses the washing machine and dryer.
Stairs and first floor
A narrow central wooden staircase connects the ground and first floors. Upstairs is the sitting room, and a further three steps lead up from there to the bedroom. All sleeping accommodation is therefore on the first floor.
The bedroom
The brass king-size bed sits beneath low sloping eaves and exposed stonework. The ceiling is low over the bed, so care is needed getting in and out, and the space tends to suit those who are shorter in stature. Please take particular care moving around upstairs.
Light levels
The first-floor sitting room has limited natural light and can feel dark, which some guests love for cosiness but is worth knowing if you need bright light for reading or other tasks.
Outside and the surroundings
There is no private outside space or garden. Lovely walks start a few steps from the door, but these are rural lanes and paths, and the ground near the ford over the River Dorn can be uneven - please take care, especially with children and dogs, and do not attempt to drive through the ford.
Dogs and assistance dogs
One well-behaved small to medium-sized dog is welcome by arrangement.
Ask us anything
We want every guest to feel comfortable. If anything here raises a question - the stairs, the eaves, light levels, or anything else - please make an enquiry and Gina and Simon will give you an honest answer before you book.
